How to Calculate Fuel Cost for a Road Trip

The formula is simple: Fuel Cost = (Distance ÷ MPG) × Gas Price. For a 300-mile trip at 28 MPG with gas at $3.50/gallon: (300 ÷ 28) × $3.50 = 10.7 gallons × $3.50 = $37.50. For a round trip, double the distance. This calculator also shows cost-per-mile, which is useful for comparing reimbursement rates — the IRS standard mileage rate for 2025 is $0.70 per mile for business use.

Frequently Asked Questions

The IRS standard mileage rate for 2025 is $0.70 per mile for business use (up from $0.67 in 2024), $0.21 per mile for medical or moving purposes, and $0.14 per mile for charity. If your employer reimburses you for business travel, you can claim any difference above the IRS rate as a deduction. Keep a mileage log with date, destination, and business purpose for each trip.

Key tips: maintain proper tire pressure (each 1 PSI drop reduces MPG by 0.2%), avoid aggressive acceleration and hard braking, use cruise control on highways, remove unnecessary roof racks or cargo, keep up with air filter and spark plug maintenance, avoid idling for more than 30 seconds, and drive at 55–65 MPH on highways (fuel efficiency drops sharply above 65 MPH).

To convert US MPG to L/100km: divide 235.215 by the MPG value. Example: 30 MPG = 235.215 ÷ 30 = 7.84 L/100km. To convert back: 235.215 ÷ L/100km = MPG. Note that UK MPG uses Imperial gallons (1 UK gallon = 1.2009 US gallons), so UK and US MPG values are not directly comparable.
