What is the Afghanistan (Shamsi) calendar?
The Afghanistan calendar is the Shamsi, or Solar Hijri, calendar — the official civil calendar of Afghanistan. It is a solar calendar that begins on Nawroz (the spring equinox, around 21 March) and counts years from the Hijra in 622 CE. Because it tracks the sun, its dates stay aligned with the seasons, unlike the lunar Hijri calendar. The year has 12 months: the first six have 31 days, the next five have 30 days, and the final month, Hoot, has 29 days (30 in a leap year). Afghanistan uses zodiac month names such as Hamal and Sawr, while Iran uses different Persian names for the same calendar.
