What is a Fraction Calculator?

A fraction calculator performs arithmetic on fractions — numbers expressed as one integer divided by another (a numerator over a denominator). While basic addition and multiplication are straightforward with whole numbers, fraction arithmetic requires finding common denominators for addition and subtraction, and applying the cross-multiplication rule for division. Our calculator handles all four operations and automatically simplifies results to lowest terms.

How to Use the Fraction Calculator

  1. Enter the numerator (top number) and denominator (bottom number) for each fraction.
  2. Select the operation: + (add), − (subtract), × (multiply), ÷ (divide).
  3. Results appear instantly: simplified fraction, decimal, and mixed number.
  4. Scroll down to see the step-by-step working.

Frequently Asked Questions

To add fractions, find the least common denominator (LCD), convert each fraction to an equivalent fraction with the LCD, then add the numerators. For example: 1/4 + 1/6 → LCD is 12 → 3/12 + 2/12 = 5/12.

Divide both the numerator and denominator by their Greatest Common Divisor (GCD). For example, 8/12 — the GCD of 8 and 12 is 4, so 8÷4=2 and 12÷4=3, giving 2/3.

To divide fractions, multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second. Flip the second fraction (swap numerator and denominator) and multiply. Example: 2/3 ÷ 4/5 = 2/3 × 5/4 = 10/12 = 5/6.

Divide the numerator by the denominator. For example, 3/4 = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. Some fractions produce repeating decimals: 1/3 = 0.333... In this case we show the decimal rounded to 6 decimal places.
