What is the Hijri Calendar?

The Hijri calendar (also called the Islamic lunar calendar) is the official religious calendar of Islam and is used across the Muslim world for determining the dates of Islamic holidays, Ramadan fasting, Hajj, and other religious observances. It is a purely lunar calendar of 12 months, each beginning with the new crescent moon, making it approximately 11 days shorter than the Gregorian solar calendar per year.

In Afghanistan, three calendars are in everyday use simultaneously: the Hijri (Islamic lunar) for religious events, the Shamsi (Solar Hijri / Afghan Solar) for government, official dates, and everyday civil life, and the Gregorian calendar for international correspondence.
