What is the Hijri Calendar?

The Hijri calendar (also called the Islamic lunar calendar) is the official religious calendar of Islam and is used across the Muslim world for determining the dates of Islamic holidays, Ramadan fasting, Hajj, and other religious observances. It is a purely lunar calendar of 12 months, each beginning with the new crescent moon, making it approximately 11 days shorter than the Gregorian solar calendar per year.

In Afghanistan, three calendars are in everyday use simultaneously: the Hijri (Islamic lunar) for religious events, the Shamsi (Solar Hijri / Afghan Solar) for government, official dates, and everyday civil life, and the Gregorian calendar for international correspondence. This tool displays all three side by side for every day of the Hijri month.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Hijri calendar is a pure lunar calendar used for Islamic religious observances. The Shamsi calendar (Solar Hijri) is the official Afghan civil calendar — it is a solar calendar that begins on Nowruz (around 21 March) and uses the same era (Hijra) as a reference point but is solar-based, making it stable relative to the seasons. Afghanistan uses Shamsi dates for government documents, ID cards, and everyday civil matters.

In Afghanistan, the working week traditionally began on Saturday, with Friday as the holy day of rest (Juma). While the official work week has shifted in some contexts, many Afghans still consider Saturday as the first working day of the week. This calendar tool supports both Saturday-start (Afghan convention) and Sunday-start (international convention) week layouts via the toggle at the top.

Ramadan 1446 AH is expected to begin around 1 March 2025 in Afghanistan, subject to moon sighting confirmation by local religious authorities. The exact date may shift by one day depending on the crescent moon visibility. Navigate to Ramadan (month 9) of year 1446 in this calendar to see all dates. Check our dedicated Ramadan Times tool for Sehri and Iftar schedules for all Afghan cities.

This calendar uses the tabular (arithmetic) Hijri calendar algorithm, which is the standard used in most digital Islamic calendar applications. It is accurate to within one day for most dates. In practice, Islamic months officially begin upon confirmed moon sighting by religious authorities, which may differ by 1 day from the calculated date. For official religious matters, always follow your local authority's announcement.
