What is a Word Counter?

A word counter is a text analysis tool that counts the number of words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and lines in a piece of text, typically in real time as you type or paste. Word count is one of the most fundamental metrics in writing: academic essays have minimum word counts, blog posts are optimised for specific length ranges for SEO, social media platforms have character limits, and publishers specify word counts for articles, short stories, and novels. Understanding how long your text is — and in what dimensions — is essential for virtually every type of writing.

Beyond simple word count, our tool also calculates estimated reading time based on the average adult reading speed of 210 words per minute (the commonly cited research figure from Brysbaert et al., 2019), character count with and without spaces, sentence count, paragraph count, and line count. These statistics are useful for writers targeting specific reading time estimates for blog posts, marketers crafting email subject lines within character limits, students verifying essay length, and developers testing text input fields.

How to Use the Word Counter

  1. Type or paste your text into the large text area — all statistics update in real time as you type.
  2. Check the top row for Words, Characters, Sentences, and Paragraphs.
  3. Check the bottom row for Characters (no spaces), estimated Reading Time, and Lines.
  4. Use the Clear button to reset, or Copy Text to copy your text to clipboard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Reading time is estimated by dividing the word count by the average adult reading speed. Research by Brysbaert et al. (2019) published in the Journal of Cognition found the average silent reading speed for adults is approximately 238 words per minute for non-fiction and around 260 for fiction. Our tool uses a conservative 210 words per minute to account for more complex or technical text. Medium, the blogging platform, uses a similar estimation for their "X min read" indicators.

Sentences are detected by splitting the text at period (.), exclamation mark (!), and question mark (?) characters, then filtering out empty segments. This is a heuristic approach — it works well for most standard prose but may overcount sentences with abbreviations (e.g., "Dr. Smith") or undercount sentences in highly informal writing. For precise sentence analysis in academic or linguistic research, dedicated NLP tools are more accurate.

Research on SEO and content marketing generally suggests 1,500–2,500 words for blog posts targeting Google search rankings. Longer, comprehensive content tends to rank better because it signals topical authority and attracts more backlinks. HubSpot data suggests posts of 2,100–2,400 words perform best for organic search. However, the ideal length depends on the topic, competition, and intent — a quick "how-to" guide doesn't need 3,000 words, while an ultimate guide may justify 5,000+.

Our tool shows both: "Characters" counts every character including spaces, and "Chars (no spaces)" counts only non-whitespace characters. Twitter's 280-character limit counts spaces. Academic submission systems typically use characters with spaces for their character counts. Publishing and design work often specifies characters without spaces. Having both figures lets you match whichever definition your platform or style guide uses.
