Gold Karat Purity Calculator

Convert gold Karats (K) to purity percentage and fineness (parts per thousand).

Karat (K)

Understand the True Purity of Your Gold

When buying jewelry or bullion, gold is usually measured in Karats (denoted by "K" or "kt"). Pure gold is 24 Karats, but because pure gold is extremely soft, it is often alloyed with other metals like copper or silver to increase its durability.

Our Gold Karat Purity Calculator translates the Karat number into an exact percentage of pure gold, as well as its Millesimal Fineness (the number of parts of gold per thousand). Simply enter a Karat value like 14K, 18K, or 22K to see exactly how much actual gold your jewelry contains.

24K gold means the metal is 100% pure gold (or practically 99.9% fine). It contains no other alloyed metals, making it very valuable but also very soft and prone to scratching.

18 Karat gold consists of 18 parts gold and 6 parts alloy. This equates to exactly 75% pure gold (18 divided by 24).

Fineness is a system used to measure purity in parts per thousand. For example, 22K gold has a fineness of 916 (meaning 91.6% pure gold). You will often see 750 stamped on 18K jewelry, and 585 stamped on 14K jewelry.
