Frequently Asked Questions

Chargeable income is your total income minus all allowable deductions and personal reliefs. It's the amount on which your income tax is actually calculated. Common reliefs include CPF contributions (up to S$37,740), Earned Income Relief (up to S$8,000 for under-55s), NSman relief, parent relief, and child relief.

You must file if your annual income exceeds S$22,000. Singapore residents (citizens, PRs, foreigners residing 183+ days) pay resident tax rates. Non-residents are taxed at a flat 15% or resident rates, whichever is higher. Most employees with only employment income and auto-inclusion are on No-Filing Service (NFS).

Maximize personal reliefs: contribute to CPF Supplementary Retirement Scheme (SRS) up to S$15,300 (citizens/PR) or S$35,700 (foreigners), claim all eligible reliefs (earned income, parent, spouse, NSman), invest in qualifying insurance policies, and make donations to approved IPCs (250% tax deduction).

The IRAS income tax filing deadline is 15 April (paper) or 18 April (e-filing) each year for the previous year's income. You can pay by GIRO (automatic monthly deductions), PayNow, or one-time payment via internet banking or AXS. Late filing attracts a penalty of S$200 to S$1,000.
