US Time Zones Explained

The contiguous United States spans four primary time zones: Eastern (ET), Central (CT), Mountain (MT), and Pacific (PT). Alaska and Hawaii have their own zones. The difference between the East and West Coast is always 3 hours — when it's 9 AM in New York (ET), it's 6 AM in Los Angeles (PT). During daylight saving time (DST), which runs from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, all US zones (except Arizona and Hawaii) shift forward one hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

The United States has 6 standard time zones: Eastern (ET), Central (CT), Mountain (MT), Pacific (PT), Alaska (AKT), and Hawaii–Aleutian (HST). Including US territories, there are additional zones such as Atlantic (AT) for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, and Samoa Standard Time (SST) for American Samoa.

In 2025, Daylight Saving Time in the United States starts on Sunday, March 9, 2025 (clocks spring forward 1 hour at 2 AM) and ends on Sunday, November 2, 2025 (clocks fall back 1 hour at 2 AM). Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii do not observe DST and stay on standard time year-round.

UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the global time standard. US time zones are offsets from UTC: Eastern is UTC−5 (or UTC−4 during DST), Central is UTC−6 (UTC−5 DST), Mountain is UTC−7 (UTC−6 DST), and Pacific is UTC−8 (UTC−7 DST). UTC doesn't change for daylight saving — only local offsets change.
