Leap Year Checker

Instantly check if a specific year is a leap year (366 days) and find the next leap years.

What makes a year a Leap Year?

A leap year is a calendar year that contains an additional day—February 29—making it 366 days long instead of the usual 365. This is done to keep our calendar aligned with the Earth's revolutions around the Sun, which actually takes about 365.2422 days.

To determine if a year is a leap year, a specific mathematical algorithm is used. The Leap Year Checker automatically applies these rules to any year you enter, instantly telling you whether it contains a leap day.

Συχνές Ερωτήσεις

A year is a leap year if it is evenly divisible by 4. However, if it is divisible by 100, it is NOT a leap year, UNLESS it is also divisible by 400. For example, 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not.

Leap years generally occur every four years, with the exception of certain century years (like 1700, 1800, and 1900) which are skipped to keep the calendar accurate.

Without leap years, our calendar would drift out of alignment with the astronomical seasons by about 24 days every 100 years. Summer would eventually happen in December in the Northern Hemisphere!
