What is Tola and Mithqal?

The Tola is a traditional unit of mass used across South Asia and the Middle East. It equals exactly 11.664 grams and is still the standard unit for gold trading in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. The Mithqal is an older Islamic unit of weight equal to approximately 4.608 grams, historically used across the Islamic world from the Middle East to Central Asia.

Frequently Asked Questions

The international gold spot price is quoted in USD per troy ounce (31.1035 grams). To convert to AFN per gram, we divide the USD/oz price by 31.1035 to get USD per gram, then multiply by the current AFN/USD exchange rate. Purity adjustments are applied by multiplying by the decimal purity (e.g., 0.917 for 22K gold).

21K gold (87.5% pure) is the dominant jewellery standard across Afghanistan and much of the Middle East. It strikes a balance between high gold content (and thus high value) and the durability needed for everyday wear. Pure 24K gold is too soft for most jewellery designs, making 21K the preferred compromise in Afghan bazaars.

Mahr (also spelled Mehr or Meher) is a mandatory Islamic gift from the groom to the bride upon marriage. It is a right guaranteed by Islamic law (fiqh) and must be agreed upon before or at the time of the marriage contract (nikah). It is often specified as a weight of gold (e.g., 100 tolas of 21K gold) and then paid in cash at the current market rate. Our Mahr calculator converts the gold weight to its current AFN or USD equivalent.

One Tola equals exactly 11.664 grams. This is the standardised definition used in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and across South Asia for gold trading. When buying gold in Afghan bazaars (sarafi shops), prices are almost always quoted per tola. One tola is approximately 0.375 troy ounces.
