How to Calculate GPA

GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated by multiplying each course's grade point value by its credit hours to get quality points, summing all quality points, then dividing by total credit hours. Example: an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course contributes 12 quality points. A B (3.0) in a 4-credit course contributes 12 quality points. If those are your only two courses: (12+12) ÷ (3+4) = 24 ÷ 7 = 3.43 GPA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most US high schools and colleges require a 3.5 GPA (B+/A− average) for the Dean's List or honor roll. Magna Cum Laude is typically 3.7+, and Summa Cum Laude is 3.9+. Requirements vary by institution — check your school's specific thresholds.

Top graduate programs typically want a 3.5+ GPA. Medical schools in the US average around 3.7 overall and 3.64 science GPA for accepted students. Law schools at top schools (T14) average 3.8+. Always check specific program requirements.

GPA is weighted by credits — heavier courses matter more. To raise your GPA significantly, take more credits per semester and aim for high grades, especially in 4-credit courses. Retaking failed courses (where schools replace the grade) can also help. Use the cumulative GPA section above to run scenarios.
