What is a keyboard tester?
A keyboard tester checks whether every key on your keyboard is working. As you press each key, the matching key on the on-screen keyboard lights up — turning green once it has been tested. If a key never lights up, it isn't registering and may be stuck, dirty or faulty. It's the quickest way to diagnose a broken keyboard, test a second-hand or mechanical keyboard, or check for "ghosting" (keys that don't register when several are pressed together).
How to use
- Click anywhere on this page so it has keyboard focus.
- Press each key one at a time — it flashes blue, then stays green.
- Any key that never turns green is not being detected.

Frequently asked questions
If a key never registers here, it usually means it's faulty, stuck or dirty. Try cleaning under the keycap first. Note that some laptop function keys and the Fn key don't send a signal to the browser, so they may not appear.
Ghosting is when pressing several keys at once causes some to not register. Hold down multiple keys here to see which ones light up — keyboards with N-key rollover will register them all.
Some keys — like Fn, screen brightness and certain media keys — are handled by hardware and never reach the browser, so they can't be tested here even though they work.
